What do I need to know to protect my premium cigars?
We’ve consolidated some of the basics for protecting your cigars in this video complication – #AskBoveda Tobacco 101
What Boveda RH do I need for tobacco?
65% RH — For Cuban cigars because Cuban cigars are tightly bound and tend to mold at a higher RH level. We recommend this RH for long-term storage of oily tobacco commonly found in Puro cigars from one territory. 69% RH (Most popular RH for premium cigars) — For cigars in airtight humidors, including but not exclusively for Boveda Humidor Bags, polymer travel humidors. Also best for high-end humidors, including but not exclusively Elie Bleu and Daniel Marshall. 72% RH—For cigars in most wood humidors, glass top humidors and non-polymer travel humidors. Since wood humidors exchange moisture, it’s not uncommon to see a decrease of 2–5%RH. The 72% accommodates and even compensates for the moisture loss allowing the humidor to maintain a sought-after high 60s RH level. 75% RH — For cigars in drafty humidors and extreme environments, the 75% accommodates a high amount of moisture loss allowing the humidor to maintain a high 60s RH level. Also recommended for humidors housed at high altitudes and in desert-like conditions (use at your own discretion). 84% RH — ONLY use to precondition (or season) a wood humidor WITHOUT cigars in it. This formula is specifically designed to provide moisture directly to the cellular structure of the wood humidor during the seasoning process. Once you’ve seasoned with Boveda, your humidor is primed for your most treasured cigars. GOOD TO KNOW:
  1. Don’t mix RH levels within the same humidor.
  2. Don’t use Boveda in the same humidor with other humidification products because they will fight against each other and reduce the efficiency of Boveda.
  3. It’s common that the actual RH of your humidor will stabilize up to 5 points lower than the Boveda RH you’re using because of humidor quality and ambient dryness. All Boveda are accurate to +/- 2% of the RH printed on the pack in an airtight environment. Ideal RH for cigars can range from 60%-72% depending on your cigar inventory.

Can Boveda directly touch my cigars and tobacco?
Sure, Boveda can 100% come in contact with cigars. Boveda is FDA compliant and food safe. Since Boveda is made from only natural salts and water, it won’t change the taste of your cigars. But Boveda will enhance those flavors as it protects the oils and sugars in the tobacco. So feel free to slip Boveda in, among and on top of your cigars. If you like to keep your cigar storage tidy, check out the Boveda holders in Tobacco Accessories. You can  attach them to the lid, shelves or sides of a humidor to suspend your Boveda up and out of your way.
How do I season a humidor with Boveda?

Watch How To Set Up a Humidor

Before you add cigars to it, every wooden humidor needs to be seasoned to:
  • Prevent the wood from robbing your cigar’s essential moisture. (Seasoning raises the wood’s moisture level so it’ll be in equilibrium with your cigars.)
  • Create a better seal for the lid, which keeps moisture from escaping.
How many Boveda to use:
  • Use (1) Boveda Size 60 for every 25 TOTAL cigars your humidor can hold. Example: For a 100-cigar capacity humidor, use four (4) Size 60 Boveda at once.
How to season a humidor with Boveda:
  1. Remove your cigars from your humidor and move them into a closed Tupperware® container, cooler or a Humidor Bag with 69% Boveda.
  2. Place the 84% Boveda seasoning pack(s) inside your empty wooden humidor.
  3. Close the lid and don’t open the humidor for 14 days—no matter what your hygrometer readings are. (The wait is worth it. Trust us.)
  4. After 14 days, open your humidor, remove the Boveda seasoning pack(s) and discard them—they aren’t reusable.
  5. Move your cigars into your well-seasoned humidor and add new Boveda packs in your desired RH—65%, 69%, 72% or 75%. This handy chart will help you choose the right RH for you.

How often to season a wooden humidor:
  • If you live in a dry climate or experience seasonal dryness, we recommend re-seasoning a wooden humidor one to two times a year.
Should you season a wineador?

Yes, if a windeador has wood trays and shelves, you should season the unit before adding cigars. Seasoning conditions the wood components inside the wineador. Remove the clear plastic overwrap before using. Do NOT open the humidity packet inside. Place the Boveda 84% packs inside an EMPTY unplugged electric cabinet/cooler. Close the door and don’t open the cabinet for 7 days. After 7 days, open the cabinet, remove the Boveda seasoning packs and discard them—they aren’t reusable. Move your items back in, plug in your cabinet & add new Boveda 69% RH maintenance pack (sold separately). NEVER MIX the 84% with any other %RH.

Can I use Boveda with other humidification devices in my cigar humidor?
No. Boveda works best alone. If you were to use a wet sponge, crystals, gels or beads along with Boveda, the Boveda would switch its focus from protecting your cigars to absorbing the high humidity of those unnecessary humidification devices. This would result in great sponges, but ruined cigars. Now that you’re using Boveda in your humidor, you can toss away those other devices. They were merely humidifying your humidor, not providing precise 2-way humidity control. Remember, Boveda ADDS AND ABSORBS water vapor—whatever’s needed in your humidor. And when you use Boveda, you don’t have to add anything. Just slip it in your humidor and Boveda gets to work. That time you devoted to rewetting sponges, can now be allocated to smoking another cigar!
