What happens when Boveda is used with a secondary humidification system (ie: gels, crystals, glycerin, PG solution, beads, distilled water, etc.)?
Boveda is a true 2-way humidity control device. Most other humidification systems are one-way devices. This means they only release moisture into the container. After one-way humidifiers are re-filled, they immediately start evaporating and releasing 100% humidity until they’re dried out. So why is that a problem when used with Boveda?
Boveda’s smart technology stops adding moisture once the ambient humidity level reaches the number printed on the pack. It’s accurate to within +/- 2% in a sealed environment, even after giving up or absorbing moisture. That’s why Boveda lasts so much longer than typical humidifiers, and stops the wild fluctuations in humidity.
If you combine Boveda with a secondary humidification device, the only thing Boveda is doing is absorbing the moisture that’s leaking out of the other humidifier. It’s not going into the product where you want it to be. The result: Boveda reaches absorption capacity and the RH inside your container climbs into the mold generation zone. Over time you open your container, and air leaks out, you’ll settle back down into the zone where Boveda works. That is until you refill your secondary device again.
If your Boveda is being depleted quickly (less than 2 months) then you know that Boveda is working extra hard to keep that environment stable. The solution is to verify your humidor doesn’t need to be re-seasoned, or to add more Boveda packs. The more Boveda packs you add, the more efficient they’ll work and the longer they’ll last. Adding more than the smallest amount recommended by Boveda is perfectly ok. In some cases required for dry climates, seasonality, or very leaky humidors.
