Tobacco How To's

Why is it Important to Season Your Humidor?

In the name of Rocky Patel, please, please, please don’t store cigars in a new humidor without seasoning it first. Think it’s too complicated? Seasoning a humidor doesn’t have to be a CHEM 101 project. See how easy it is to make your humidor cigar-ready with a Boveda Starter Kit. (And all you have to do is toss it in and be patient for two weeks. No peeking.)

Can you skip humidor seasoning?

A new humidor is a like a vampire. Its dry wooden interior is thirsty. It will suck the moisture out of every unsuspecting Arturo Fuente it comes in contact with. Additionally, you’ll constantly battle low humidity levels that will dry out your cigars, which affects how they taste and burn.

What about seasoning a humidor with distilled water?

DON’T RISK IT! Online you might see people using the wipe-down method to season a wood humidor. Please do not wipe down the inside of your humidor with distilled water and a cloth or sponge—it doesn’t humidify the wood. At the most, you’ll provide two to three grams of moisture to the veneer of your humidor. (Think of it like staining a piece of wood with water.) You’re also introducing 100% moisture to the surface, which can damage the wood. You can crack or warp the humidor and even create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Your humidor and its seal may not recover from improper seasoning.

Larger humidor? Just double up on Boveda Stater Kits— If your wood humidor is a 150-count, pair a 50-count kit with a 100-count kit.

Each Boveda Starter Kit comes with special packets to season the inside of your humidor. Just remove the clear overwrap from the B84 packets. (Do not tear up the brown packet itself.) Place all of the unwrapped seasoning packets inside the EMPTY wood humidor. Each one slowly releases 35 grams of moisture into your humidor, which slowly and exactly humidifies the wood. After two weeks, those B84 packets will have raised the moisture in your humidor to about 65% RH—without disturbing the integrity and the geometry of the wood.
