Why Salt is Better in Humidity Control for Cannabis Storage

Cultivators are so precise about flower’s growing environment —the soil, temperature, light, moisture, etc. Why after weeks of carefully cultivation do growers and processors leave the quality of cannabis to chance when its in storage? (This isn’t you, of course, just most of the other flower peddlers on the market.)

Ninety percent of cannabis flower sold in the market is sold underweight and is unprotected from losing their terpenes forever.

Only 10% of cannabis is protected against mold growth and over drying

When flower is in storage, it’s still important to maintain the relative humidity (RH) range recommended by ASTM INTERNATIONAL, a global organization that establishes industry standards for manufacturing and services. To ensure optimal RH, store flower in an airtight container or package with 2-way humidity control. But not all cannabis humidifiers are effective or precise.

USE 2-WAY HUMIDITY CONTROL WITH A SATURATED SALT SOLUTION, LIKE BOVEDA, IF YOU VALUE PRECISION WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FLOWER

WHY IS SALT IMPORTANT?

For centuries, people have used saturated salt solutions to prevent fresh products from degrading. Since the Stone Age (WILMA!), people have preserved food with salt. Meat only available sporadically could be preserved, so it would be safe to consume months later.

Salt kills off microbes by absorbing their moisture. In other words, salt dehydrates molds and microbes to death. (Cruel, but effective.)

Along with sanitation, saline (salt) solutions are also used in health care. In hospitals and care facilities, medications are often intravenously dispensed with a saline solution. It’s also used to achieve a targeted electrolyte balance if you’re dehydrated. And mothers throughout the ages have encouraged kids to gargle with salt water for a sore throat to ease pain, reduce swelling and flush out harmful bacteria.

WHAT’S SALT HAVE TO DO WITH CANNABIS STORAGE?

Inside Boveda is salt, pure water and a food-safe thickening agent. The salt-based solution is sealed in Boveda’s patented vapor phase osmosis membrane. As needed, Boveda releases and absorbs pure water vapor into a cannabis container to shield trichomes in protective water molecules.

But it’s the excess salt in Boveda’s solution that helps create the stable desired RH for stored cannabis. As water vapor is released from or absorbed into the membrane, the water to salt ratio changes. The salt dissolves when more water is absorbed. The salt precipitates or becomes a solid again when more water is released.

Using nature’s original preserver, salt, Boveda dials-in and maintains your container’s humidity levels to 58% or 62%, much like a thermostat.

Boveda is the only product that incorporates this unique technology for cannabis storage.

What about other humidifying packets?

Other humidity packets for cannabis use chemical compounds that aren’t in a saturated solution. So there’s no back and forth of water vapor like you find in Boveda to protect cannabis from moisture fluctuations.

And cannabis packets that use glycerin simply create a specific starting RH. Very quickly, the humidity “control ” of glycerin-based packets is lost after the water is absorbed or evaporated from its package.

As soon as glycerin-based packets give up or absorb moisture, the RH level inside your cannabis container or package changes wildly.

SO WHERE DOES THE SALT GO?

Nowhere. The salt stays safely inside the Boveda leakproof membrane. So the salt in Boveda NEVER comes in contact with your flower. Only water vapor passes in and out of the membrane to safely and precisely humidify your flower. ADDING AND ABSORBING MOISTURE is what makes Boveda 2-way humidity control. And it’s how Boveda can prevent terpene and water weight loss in stored cannabis.
